Adult acne
Hormone-related breakouts on the chin and neck that appear after the age of 25.
Acne that appears for the first time after the age of 25, or that has lasted for years, is called adult acne. It is more common in women and often shows up on the lower face, chin and neck. The answer to “why at this age?” usually lies in hormones, stress and daily skincare.
Typical signs
- Deep, painful bumps on the chin, jawline and neck
- Breakouts that worsen before your period
- Skin that is both oily and sensitive alongside the breakouts
- Brown or red marks that stay long after the spots
Which causes are investigated
- Hormonal changes and gynaecological causes such as polycystic ovary syndrome
- Stress and disrupted sleep
- Comedogenic cosmetics and heavy creams
- Some medicines and supplements
Treatment
With adult acne it is not enough to clear the breakouts on the surface; you need to find the internal cause behind them. When needed I order tests and work together with a gynaecologist or endocrinologist. Treatment includes topical preparations, oral medicines and care that suits your skin.
