Fungal infections
Laboratory diagnosis and treatment of pityriasis versicolor, nail and skin fungus.
Fungal infections of the skin, nails and scalp are very common and are sometimes mistaken for other skin conditions. A simple laboratory test, checking a skin scraping under the microscope, is often enough for an accurate diagnosis.
The most common ones
- Pityriasis versicolor: light or dark patches on the back, chest and shoulders
- Athlete’s foot and fungus between the toes
- Nail fungus (onychomycosis)
- Fungal infections of the groin and body
Treatment
Treatment depends on the type and extent of the infection: topical creams, shampoos or oral preparations. Applying steroid creams on your own can make a fungal infection worse, so a diagnosis has to come first.
